WHAT’S DONE ON AN UNVENTED HOT WATER CYLINDER ANNUAL SERVICE?
You’ll find the exact requirements for the service in your cylinder’s maintenance manual, which the heating engineer will sign the back of after each yearly service. The engineer will also supply their own company a check list on completion of the annual service.
Here’s an example of what checks the heating engineer would carry out on an unvented hot water cylinder.
Heating
Check the pressure on the heating system expansion vessel (1-1.5 Bar)
Test the operation of the pressure relief valve
Top up the system if required and check the operation of the filling loop
Check the filling loop for leaks and rectify where required
Test the operation of the central heating flow two port valve (Zone 1) manual
and automatic fires on demand
Test the operation of the central heating flow two port valve (Zone 2) if
applicable
Check the electrics at the wiring centre
Check the manual bottle air eliminator and vent any excess air in the system
Check the operation of controller to ensure manual and automatic operation
Check the operation of the circulating pump and test the load
Check operation of secondary return pump (where applicable)
Hot Water
Check the pressure in the expansion vessel (3 Bar)
Test the expansion relief valve on the inlet control set for correct operation
Test the temperature relief valve for correct operation
Clean the mesh filter on the mains inlet set
Test the operation of the immersion heater and check the load
Check the immersion heater thermostat and water temperature
Test the operation of the dual thermostat for correct operation
Test DWH 2 port valve for automatic and manual operation
Check the operation of the controller to ensure manual and automatic operation
Note: additional parts and labour may be charged extra.
Before any annual service, we recommend you ask the engineer for their ID and qualifications, when they arrive.
Frequently asked questions
How often should I get my unvented hot water cylinder serviced?
To stay in the manufacturer warranty it should be every 12 months. It’s also a great idea to get your cylinder serviced in Spring or Summer. You’re out of those harsh Winter months so your cylinder will have worked through the worst of the seasons. It’s a good time to check no problems have occurred during the Winter months and tick it off the Spring clean list for another year.

What are the common problems with unvented cylinders?

Can I book repairs on the cylinder?
Yes, the heating engineer will advise what needs fixing after carrying out the annual service and give you a quote directly. The engineer can supply and fit parts. Sometimes this can be done on the same day.
How do I pay the heating engineer?
To confirm the cylinder service booking, BoilerBooker take the payment on behalf of the heating engineer via bank transfer. Please read our terms and conditions for more information.

I recommend Boiler Booker in a heartbeat!
Before getting onto a group booking I have (almost) never serviced my boiler, mostly because it seemed daunting. With these guys, I didn't have to search for hours and wait for a myriad of quotes..
